Heritage and Society
Greyscale Ltd dedicates a share of its annual profits to philanthropic digital preservation projects — making history accessible to everyone, everywhere.
Our commitment
Heritage belongs to everyone — not just institutions
For over a decade, Greyscale has worked alongside archives, libraries, national institutions, banks, and religious organisations to digitise and preserve irreplaceable records.
We have seen first-hand how access to historical documents can change lives — reconnecting communities, informing research, and bringing lost histories back to light.
We believe that the commercial success of our work creates a responsibility to give back. That is why Greyscale allocates a portion of its annual profits to support digital heritage projects that would not otherwise receive funding.
"There is rather a lot of human history sitting in boxes that no one can read. We thought someone ought to do something about that."
— Mattia Traversa, Founder, Greyscale Ltd

Preserving history beyond business
Focus areas
Where our philanthropic investment goes
Endangered archives
Supporting the digitisation of collections at risk — fragile materials, underfunded institutions, and archives in conflict-affected regions.
Open access publishing
Funding the publication of digitised collections on open platforms, making records freely searchable by researchers and families worldwide.
Digital skills in archives
Training archivists in communities with limited access to technology, building local capacity to preserve heritage for future generations.
Community heritage
Supporting grassroots projects that bring local and family history to communities who have historically been excluded from institutional archives.
Our commitment
A long-term commitment, not a one-off gesture
Our philanthropic programme is embedded in how we operate — not a campaign or a one-time donation, but an ongoing commitment that grows as Greyscale grows. The more we succeed commercially, the more we can give back to the communities whose heritage we are privileged to work with.
